We have officially finished up our valentines-for-classmates preparations. I think they turned out great. The idea and the execution are both very simple.

Simply take a photo of your child holding their fist out. You can crop it to make it fit the space if needed.
Then print it out on cardstock or a stiff photo paper.
Using an exacto-knife, cut a small slit on both sides of the fist.
Then slip a lollipop through the cuts.
Optional: I added a little banner to the side that says “Happy Valentine’s Day”, but it’s not necessary. You could also have your child wear something with a heart on it to put the point across. Your child can add handwritten note to the back if they prefer.

To all the parents who are up late making stuff: I salute you with my exacto knife.

These are great! How did you get the border/text down the side? I’ve tried Picnik and photoshop – can’t figure it out!

Can you tell me where I can find a tutorial on these 3d valentines? how is the picture taken so the arm looks 3d?
Thank you so much for this idea. I made these with my daughter and they turned out adorable! As a working mom who is also 8 months pregnant, I was so happy to do this quick, easy project that has such charm. Here is a picture (on Pinterest) http://pinterest.com/pin/198791771021734950/
Linda – in photoshop, create a new layer for the text. Add the text then go up to Edit -> Transform and you will select Rotate, then 90 degrees CCW. To get a background behind it, you may also want to use the rectangular select tool to create a layer behind it and fill it in with the paint bucket tool with the color you like. Good luck! Sandra – as long as your child’s arm is outstretched in the photo at a slight angle toward the camera, it will look 3D.

These have been a huge hit ’round these parts. Such a clever idea. The biggest challenge was getting Miss M to pose for the snapshot. Ours turned out with a charming smirk. (Not an unusual expression for her). Thank you for sharing this. Happy Valentine’s Day!
