I’m still amazed that it’s really October! The conversation at our house has pretty much turned to non-stop Halloween topics. Same for you? I keep warning the kids that Halloween is not a big deal in France (and that October 31st falls during a 2-week school break), but they can’t help themselves.
They are daydreaming about throwing a party for their friends. Bobbing for apples, pumpkin carving, maybe a spook house in the barn. Martha’s new book Handmade Holiday Crafts, came in the mail last Friday, so they’ve been taking turns bookmarking their favorite ideas from the Halloween section. Personally, I’m feeling drawn to the glittery projects (skulls, bones and pumpkins). I suppose I’m just looking for an excuse to get my glitter on.
Have you started making Halloween plans? Are you hosting a Halloween party this year?
UPDATE: The good people at Martha Stewart saw this post and want to offer 5 (autographed!) copies of Handmade Holiday Crafts to Design Mom Readers. So this post just turned into a giveaway. Woot! Tricker Treating at Daddy’s work and then watching the kids give out the candy they don’t want to the tricker treaters that come to our door! So funny because we do it every year.
Halloween sugar cookies! In shapes of course. Even gluten & diary free for some of my kids.
I’d love a copy. I <3 ms crafts!
Making Caramel and Chocolate Apples! So pretty wrapped in celophane. Plus, they are an unexpected treat to give to neighbors!
I love Martha! My favorite holiday tradition is decorating gingerbread men to look like the people we give them to. My neighbor who always wears a suit gets a tie, my redheaded nephew gets a red headed gingerkid etc.
Would take a vacation day to sit and look through the book.
Pumpkin (or Pubba) carving as referred to in our house.
I am all about the glitter too! I love the happy and festive decorations, not much for the scary, gory ones!
My girls love to make huge paper pumpkins that we decorate and then stick to our front door.
We also make garbage bag ghosts for our tree ;-)
Now that my daughter is getting older, our Halloween tradition is making as many homemade decorations as we can to celebrate this fun holiday!
Pumpkin carving for sure. Also, in Martha’s halloween issue magazine last year there was a diy project where you pick large fall leaves, cut them into a pumpkin shape, then glue them to some orange or yellow paper and it makes the best halloween gift tag. I have been doing it for 2 years now. Such a great idea and so simple:)
Yay count me in! We ALWAYS re-watch Hocus Pocus. We’ve got it memorized now, but it is a lot of fun!
It’s really a toss up between making costumes (we always make our own because the planning and making are half of the fun) and carving pumpkins.
We like to carve pumpkins. Going to our local pumpkin patch is always fun for the kids.
Our favorite tradition is carving jack-o-lanterns.
Halloween is not our thing, so we invite friends over that evening for a potluck dinner and play time. It is always such a blast. :)
However, every other holiday is big with us and we LOVE to craft and make gifts for loved ones which are inspired by Martha Stewart’s wonderful company.
What a wonderful (and generous!) giveaway!
My little girls just started drawing jack-o-lanterns, and they are so cute!
My favorite tradition is dressing up in costume and making spooky food and desserts!! Halloween is my favorite holiday of the whole year!
i love martha! pick me!
Preparing goody bags for the trick or treaters!
My favorite tradition for halloween so far is to decide on a family costume theme.
Costumes, candy & according to my 6yr old…..saying “Trick or Treat”!
Putting together homemade costumes and decorating the house! (looks like an awesome book.)
My favorite Halloween traditions are going to the pumpkin patch with my son and giving out extra large candy bars to the trick or treaters. Thanks for the giveaway!
Our favorite Halloween tradition is to have friends over for chli and spiced cider and take the littles around the block for trick-or-treating. Leaf-rustling, pumpkins glowing, lots of friendly greetings – it’s when my neighborhood is at its absolute best.
Carving pumpkins. My family did it every year- even when I was the last home and in high school- and I now carry on the tradition with my own kids.
A tradition in our family is candy corn and peanuts mixed together… tastes like a Payday. Martha’s book looks really interesting and like it would have a lot of great ideas. I would love one.
My favorite tradition is my in-laws’ annual Halloween Party. We eat Halloween themed food and each family brings a fun Halloween game.
Wow! Love it when that happens!!
When I was little, we had Halloween parties and my parents went all out, dressing up in the most outrageous costumes. It made for great memories!!
I always love making costumes for my kids. Letting them come up with the concept, and then together putting together the costume through thrift shop visits, fabric inspirations, and finally sewing it all together.
i love Halloween! my favorite thing about the season is making caramel apples and drizzling them with different chocolates and rolling them in some toffee. i always have the best of intentions to share…thanks for the wonderful giveaway!
This would be great! Love you Gabby and all the fun things you are doing with your family!
Homemade costumes, buying a pumpkin super early at our base commissary before they run out (no pumpkin patches here in Sicily), annual Halloween bash with friends……okay, now I’m excited!! Time to get my craft on with that new book from Martha!! Ciao!
I love making the kids costumes! We rarely do store bought, and I think it helps the kids get really creative! Second is definitely the pumpkin carving!
I love all of it.
but my fave part is that whatever we do.
we all do it together.
Pumpkin carving!!!!
I’m not one for the scary and ghoulish, but I like dressing up kids and parading around – really it’s about admiring others’ creativity. The candy and food don’t hurt either!
My favorite Halloween tradition is carving pumpkins with my sister.
Im hoping to have a Halloween party as well!! Fun Fun Fun!
Choosing the perfect pumpkins to decorate, homemade costumes because my daughter changes her mind at least twenty times, caramel apples…..yum! Time to get my craft on with that new book from Martha! Ciao!
my new favorite halloween tradition is making “spooky” food for our halloween dinner. slime juice, apple teeth, wormy hot dogs, witches’ brooms. the little ones sure love it.
One of my favorite traditions is carving the pumpkins and then baking them the day after Halloween and making pumpkin muffins from them.
I love choosing and creating a unique costume. I was a Viking one year complete With my own portable ship.
My favorite Halloween traditional is carving my pumpkin. I like it better than eating candy!
Fun times! Last year we had a party and invited friends and family for food, music, dancing, and trick-or-treats. Everyone was asking about the details for this years’ party, so it looks like it was a success and an annual tradition.
Pumpkin carving, costumes, and handing out candy to see all the neighborhood kids costumes. I love MS!
I’d love one!
Since we always seemed to have such bad weather on Halloween, we started doing indoor things with friends – pool parties, dress up dinners and the like – but we still got loads of candy! All the reward and none of the work!!
I just got back from Disneyland and was inspired by the Haunted Mansion’s “The Nightmare before Christmas”. This year I have added a little Christmas into my Halloween decor. I put up a black Christmas tree and decorated it with spooky decorations.
