Birthday Bummer

Photo and text by Gabrielle. Super cute cake flags here.

On Friday, when I was at the conference, I joined an art session taught by the fabulous A’Driane Nieves. I settled myself at one of the tables and as I got to know my table mates, it turned out that most of us had June birthdays (which means we are Geminis, if you follow that sort of thing). In fact, one of the women even had my exact same birthday! It’s always fun to find a birthday mate, right?

Except when it isn’t.

After realizing we had the same birthday, June 14th, she said, “You know, it’s also Donald Trump’s birthday. June 14th. Flag Day.”

My mouth fell open. I have rarely been caught that off guard. I said, “Are you joking? Is that for real?” I could not believe it. But apparently it’s true. I share a birthday with Donald Trump.

If you had told me this 2 years ago, it would not have even registered in my brain. I would have heard it and forgotten it within milliseconds. But when I heard the same thing a few days ago, I was so bummed! So super bummed! I know it doesn’t actually mean anything, and by the end of the day I was giggling about it, but still, I don’t want to share a birthday with Donald Trump.

Oh well.

Tell me, Friends. Who are the famous people you share a birthday with? Anyone you adore? I hope so! Not sure who shares your birthday? A quick web search will tell you — try “famous people born on [date]”. Go search, because I want to hear!

P.S. — I just heard the news that Ted Cruz dropped out of the Republican nominee race, and that Donald Trump is officially the leader of the Republican party.

  1. Hitler. Someone mentions it to me every single freaking year. My family escaped Poland during the Holocaust. Of course.

  2. I feel your pain….I am June 12th and I share with George Bush but the good George Bush the elder….

  3. Ha! June 14th is my niece’s birthday. When she was really little, her family lived in Portland, OR where there’s a great Flag Day parade every year so her parents just told her that it was for her. My brother will be *thrilled* that his daughter shares a b-day with Trump. (face palm) Can’t wait to break the news!

  4. Hmm, Gabrielle Blair and Donald Trump are NOT two names that would in any way be synonymous with each other. He could only wish to be as classy as you. :)

Never fear, if age is just a number then so is a birthdate!

  5. My dear cousin’s birthday is September 11th, which is also a hard date to share with history. When she was little and people would ask when her birthday was, she would say, “You really don’t want to know.” And then there’s a friend’s daughter, who was named Katrina just a few weeks before the New Orleans disaster.

  6. Don’t feel too horrible! Mine is March 10 and it was Osama Bin Laden’s birthday too, unfortunately. But I also get to claim Jon Hamm, so maybe that is a little bit of balance?

I have quite a few friends with the June 14 birthday…isn’t it funny how some dates are just popular among people you know?

  7. My birthday buddies were quite a fun mash up, including John Coltrane, Caesar Augustus, Ani DiFranco, Ray Charles, and Kubla Khan.

  8. I share a birthday with Ruth Bader Ginsberg AND my mom on March 15th! A pretty good pair, if I do say so myself. Apparently also Saint Nicholas.

  9. Growing up reading Bop magazine, I learned I shared my birthday with 80s pop singer Debbie Gibson. I was thrilled!

  10. You also share that June 14th birthday with my daughter, Amelia. And, man alive, is she awesome. Hope that makes up for Trump.

  11. May 6 (just 2 days away!). I share my day with George Clooney and Sigmund Freud. Sorry about the Trump thing, that is a bummer :-(

  12. I share a birthday with Fidel Castro and it was day the Berlin wall was built. August 13. I always found it more ironic than anything, maybe I should have been a communist? But on the positive side I also share a birthday with Annie Oakley and Alfred Hitchcock!

  13. Rob Lowe and Billy Corgan of th Smashing Pumpkims! Plus it’s St Patrick’s Day! Pretty pleased with all of those things!

  14. I share a birthday with you! And unfortunately Donald Trump. Trump also went to my alma mater, Fordham University, for two years. Was does this all mean? Nothing, hopefully, absolutely, nothing!

  15. My birthday is April 11, and my birthday bff is Anton LeVey: founder of the church of Satan! My husband shares a birthday with Isaac Newton, so there you go.

    1. I’m an April 11th birthday, too! Not wild about that church of satan guy. But the wife of Ghandi, Kasturba, was also born on April 11th. And Joss Stone. And a whole slew of youtube and reality tv “stars.”

  16. I’m fortunate enough to share my birthday with, amongst others, President Obama, Louis Vuitton, Louis Armstrong, Persy Bysshe Shelley, and Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon (better known as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother)

  17. Earlier this year I had to laugh when I learned that my birthday falls on the recently established “World Birth Defects Day”!

  18. My daughters birthday is April 2o, which was Adolf Hitlers. being half jewish, this seems awful and ironic. but then: it´s just a date! I share my birthday with Madonna, who I am not really into. And with my mother in law whom I love.

Thoughts on Donald Trump: The worst thing that might happen to your country.

  19. My daughter was born on Nov 22nd which is the day JFK was shot. Six years later her brother was born on July 16th, the day JFK Jr died. Creepy coincidence especially since they are our only two children.

  20. Well I would rather Trump than another Clinton in the white house! At least he has the guts to get things done. He doesnt dance around the issues like some presidents have. I am a christian and am so sad our country is becoming so anti God!

    1. God is sad that one of his children is such a bad human being. No christian heart in the world can stand behind Donald Trump. He is a kind of anti-christ.

    2. Jan, he has the guts to say hateful things NOT in the spirit of any form of Christianity. What kind of Christianity do you practice where hate is preached?

    3. Jan, he dances around every issue and is on all sides. He has no position or plan for a better America Andis full of contradictions. I am a Christian too but our country hasn’t been Christian for a long time and really most of the founding fathers weren’t terribly religious anyways.

  21. September 29, so Gene Autry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bryant Gumbel, Ann Bancroft, Kevin Durant among others.

  22. I always thought that I shared a birthday with Katherine Hepburn, until I read the story somewhere that May 12th was the day she made up to conceal her real birthday from the paparazzi. Oh well.

    1. That was actually her brother’s birthday who had died young, she did it to honor him. But yes, she was also famously private. I love her!

  23. I share my birthday with Abraham Lincoln—a fact I’ve known since I was tiny. My mom reminded me about it nearly every birthday! I’m happy with my bday mate. :)

  24. June 19th here! I’m rather shocked too hear Trump has a June birthday too–does not share the characteristics of anyone else I know born in June. Ugh. But I share the day (not the year) with Lou Gehrig, Salman Rushdie and King James, of Bible version fame.

  25. Louisa May Alcott, my Concordian, transcendentalist soul mate! I’m sure we would have been great friends. Oh, and Howie Mandel, but not as excited about that connection for some reason…

  26. A few readers have pointed this out but it’s still there, so did want to clarify that Donald Trump is not the leader of the Republican Party. He’s the party’s presumptive Presidential nominee. The leader of the Republican Party is its Chairman, Reince Priebus.

  27. I share a birthday with Keith Richards, which I love. It makes me feel like a total bad-ass! :) Another fun bday fact: my mother and mother-in-law share the same birthday!

  28. Nov 12- A scorpio!
Grace Kelly, Anne Hathaway, Auguste Rodin (the artist), Sammy Sosa, Neil Young, Elizabeth Cady Stanton (Women’s Right Activist!) and Ryan Gosling – same year, too!! Being an Oregonian – I was teased about Tanya Harding (after the knee attacks).

  29. Nov 8, I share with Gordon Ramsey and Parker Posey! Sometimes my birthday falls on election day, and this is one of those years…and it will be a big election day for sure!

  30. Hopefully, two years from now, your shared bday with Donald Trump will be a meaningless fact again! (Please please …)

  31. I share my birthday with my mom and my oldest daughter. No planning, inducing, scheduled c-section. Just nature. We love it! We have our picture taken togther every year and then enjoy dinner together. My daughter will be 24 on her next birthday. I tease her sometimes that she has a lot of pressure to continue our tradition! haha!

  32. My daughter was born on April 20, Hitler’s birthday. It is also the anniversary of Colombine. Some terrible events for sure. I think being born on September 11th would be the hardest date to share. I was born on November 11th, Veteran’s Day. A national holiday, which meant I always had my birthday off from school! I share a birthday with Gen. George Patton and Leo DiCapprio!

    1. I’m also April 20th, so bizarre! It’s weird to imagine someone like Hitler celebrating his birthday, blowing out candles or something.
My dad’s birthday is September 11th and he died in a plane crash when I was four. It is really, really weird. I’m not an American but still September 11th 2001 affected the whole world. It was weird to remember my dad on September 11th every year, be sad about his death and then that so many other people died on his birthday the same way he died.

  33. Ringo Starr, David McCullough, Satchel Paige AND it’s the first day of the running of the bulls in Pamplona!

  34. Late to the party but had to comment to say I share my birthday with Kevin Bacon. I’ve always claimed this makes me only 1^ from him in that wildly popular game. :)

  35. Well, it is official…there is no place to go that I can avoid politics. That is my bummer for the day.

  36. June 11, which seems to be a “lite” day for celeb birthdays. As a kiddo, the only one I could recall was Jacques Cousteau, which was kind of nifty, if a bit obscure. Now I’ve learned that Peter Dinklage and Hugh Laurie are also in the 06/11 ranks, which is cool.

  37. So late to this … but I found out I share a birthday with Pope Francis. That’s pretty cool. My all-time favorite birthday buddy, though, will always be my grandfather. I loved that we shared a birthday.

  38. Yes, hearing I too share a birthday with Donald Trump was a real bummer, but on the upside I share it with you, Gabby! So I’ve got to believe there are far more awesome people born on June 14th, than awful.

  39. Oh, that is a bummer about Trump’s birthday.
    :-(
I share a birthday with Billy Idol, Mark Twain, Kaley Cuoco and Winston Churchill!!
Isn’t it weird how we feel like searching for meaning in something so random??
